L'Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière (IGN) est un établissement public français à caractère administratif ayant pour mission d'assurer la production, l'entretien et la diffusion de l'information géographique de référence en France.
Pour remplir cette mission, de très nombreux repères de nivellement ont été positionnés à travers la France. Ils ont des formes diverses mais l'un des plus courant est une rond de bronze portant la mention "Nivellement Général IGN"
D'autres repères ont aussi été placé par la PLM (Paris Lyon Marseille), une compagnie ferroviaire.
D'autres encore par le Ministère de la Reconstruction, après la guerre
D'autres par des communes pour qui les informations d'altitudes avaient une grande importance.

Aujourd'hui, tous ces repères sont gérés par l'IGN mais lors des transferts de fichiers, certains semblent avoir disparus.
De passage sur le boulevard national, mon regard a été attiré par un repère, très gros, sous le pont de la voie ferrée, lui même sous le pont de l'autoroute. Je connais ce type de repère car j'en avais vu un le matin à 500 m de là et un autre l'an dernier, près du Conseil Départemental. Ces deux autres étaient enregistrés sur l'application de l'IGN mais visiblement pas celui-ci. Sur cet autre repère, une pastille, à son côté lui donnait un "nom IGN" et une altitude. Rien de ce type ici0
Après plusieurs photos envoyées à l'IGN, on me répond "Concernant le repère inconnu que vous avez retrouvé, je viens de le mettre en base. Comme il n’a pas d’altitude, il ne sera pas diffusé.
En revanche, il est présent sur notre site de diffusion interne pour indiquer aux collègues niveleurs qu’il existe un repère matérialisé à cet endroit.
S’ils ont des mesures à faire dans le secteur, ils pourront toujours le mesurer et le rendre diffusable du coup." Yes !!!
Pour l'autre repère identique vu le matin, le même mail me confirme que c'est l'un des plus vieux de Marseille et qu'ils ne pensaient qu'il n'en restait que 10. Maintenant, il en reste 11 des plus anciens.

Passing on the national boulevard, my gaze was attracted by a landmark, very large, under the railway bridge, itself under the highway bridge. I know this type of landmark because I had seen one in the morning 500 m away and another last year, near the Departmental Council. These two others were registered on the IGN application but obviously not this one. On this other landmark, a pellet, at its side gave it an "IGN name" and an altitude. Nothing like this here
After several photos sent to IGN, I am answered "Regarding the unknown reference point that you found, I have just put it in the database. As it has no altitude, it will not be broadcast.
On the other hand, it is present on our internal dissemination site to indicate to fellow levelers that there is a mark materialized at this location.
If they have measurements to make in the sector, they can always measure it and make it immediately available. " Yes !!!
For the other identical marker seen in the morning, the same email confirms to me that it is one of the oldest in Marseille and that they thought there were only 10 left. Now, there are 11 of older.
