Thirteen members met under a bush arbor and organized the church in 1837. The first church was a simple log structure and through the following years the current church was built in 1957. For its majority it was ministered by passing pastors until 1980, when weekly regular services began.

In the early 20th century Sardis was a model for establishing Sunday School programs in rural communities. A member of the church and graduate of Tuskegee Female College, Minnie Allgood, served as a field secretary for the Alabama Sunday School Association and traveled the area encouraging other churches to establish programs. In the 1940's, Sardis added a series of classrooms to support the growth of its Sunday School.

The cemetery behind the church dates back to 1840, It is enclosed by a beautiful brick and wrought-iron fence adapted from a cemetery in Williamsburg, Virginia.
