This lighthouse was built with funds donated by Belize's greatest benefactor, Baron Bliss, the 5th Baron of Portugal. At his request, he was entombed in front of the lighthouse which he designed himself prior to his death. He also requested that a regatta be held each year in the harbor outside Belize City. The regatta is held on Baron Bliss Day (now called National Heroes and Benefactors Day), a national holiday celebrated on March 9.
The lighthouse, among its main purpose of serving as a traffic warning for boats travelling nearby, has also been used for advertisement purposes as well. It has a focal plane of 16 m (52 ft) and is painted white and red.
