Bij art. 31–39 van het Verdrag van Versailles van 28 juni 1919 werden de Duitse Kreise Eupen (overwegend Duitstalig) en Malmedy (deels Franstalig, deels Duitstalig in de gemeenten rond Sankt Vith), evenals het tot dan toe als condominium bestuurde Neutraal Moresnet aan België toegezegd (de zogenaamde Oostkantons), wat in een (betwistbaar want niet geheim) referendum door de bevolking werd bevestigd. België heeft ook de soevereiniteit over een spoorlijn door Duits grondgebied, de zogenaamde Vennbahn, die delen van de Duitse gemeenten Roetgen en Monschau van de rest van Duitsland afsnijdt. De Belgisch-Duitse grens werd definitief vastgelegd in een grensverdrag ondertekend te Aken op 6 november 1922 en de schikking van 7 november 1929. De grens werd nadien nog gewijzigd door een verdrag tot ruil van grondgebied van 10 mei 1935.

In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden deze gebieden opnieuw door Duitsland geannexeerd. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de grens gecorrigeerd bij Verdrag tot correctie van de Belgisch-Duitse grens van 24 september 1956, met Protocol van 6 september 1960. Een aantal gemeenten in dit gebied vormen nu de Duitstalige Gemeenschap.

De Belgisch-Duitse grens loopt van het Drielandenpunt bij Vaals tot aan het Drielandenpunt bij Ouren.

La frontière entre l'Allemagne et la Belgique est la frontière internationale séparant deux pays membres de l'Union européenne. Celle-ci se trouve principalement au cœur de la région des Hautes Fagnes / Eifel, et emprunte pour partie les cours des rivières Our et Olef. Au niveau des entités fédérées, la frontière est partagée par les länder de Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie et Rhénanie-Palatinat pour l'Allemagne, par la Wallonie pour la Belgique

Particularité : la « ligne de chemin de fer des Fagnes » (Vennbahn en allemand), à la suite du traité de Versailles de 1920, est entièrement belge bien que son parcours pénètre à plusieurs reprises en Allemagne, formant dès lors cinq enclaves allemandes en territoire belge.

Actuellement, ce chemin de fer a fait place à une voie réservée aux usagers lents connue sous "RAVeL 48" ayant son origine à Raeren pour rejoindre Saint-Vith.

By art. 31–39 of the Treaty of Versailles of 28 June 1919, the German Kreise Eupen (predominantly German-speaking) and Malmedy (partly French-speaking, partly German-speaking in the municipalities around St. Vith), as well as Neutral Moresnet, which had until then been condominium (the so-called East Cantons), which was confirmed by the population in a (arguable because not secret) referendum. Belgium also has sovereignty over a railway line through German territory, the so-called Vennbahn, which cuts off parts of the German municipalities of Roetgen and Monschau from the rest of Germany. The Belgo-German border was definitively laid down in a border treaty signed in Aachen on November 6, 1922 and the settlement of November 7, 1929. The border was subsequently amended by a treaty to exchange territory from May 10, 1935.

These areas were again annexed by Germany during the Second World War. After the Second World War the border was corrected by the Convention for the correction of the Belgian-German border of 24 September 1956, with the Protocol of 6 September 1960. A number of municipalities in this area now form the German-speaking Community.

The Belgian-German border runs from the Drielandenpunt near Vaals to the Drielandenpunt near Ouren.

Particularity: the "Fagnes railway line" (Vennbahn in German), following the treaty of Versailles of 1920, is entirely Belgian although its course penetrates several times in Germany, forming then five German enclaves in territory Belgian.

Currently, this railway has been replaced by a slow-lane lane known as "RAVeL 48" that originated in Raeren to reach St. Vith.
