Lake Merrasjärvi is a shallow, humus-rich lake that suffers from winter oxygen deprivation. For example, in 1975-76, the entire lake ran out of oxygen, resulting in the deaths of mass fish. Also in the winters of 1981 and 1982, oxygen was in danger of running out and only aeration saved the fish stock. The measure has had to be renewed in many winters. Phosphorus has also been precipitated in the lake with aluminum sulphate. The catchment area of the lake has been rehabilitated and the internal load has been reduced by removing aquatic vegetation and intensive roach fishing.
