The owner of Moore Liquor discusses with News 5 the importance of allowing liquor stores to sell liquor on Sundays.

Article text:

History was made Tuesday night in Oklahoma when voters in seven counties said yes to allowing liquor stores to open Sunday.

Once the election results are finalized, liquor stores will be able to add Sundays to their hours of operation. Some liquor store owners told KOCO 5 it gives them a chance to compete with the big stores.

"Interestingly, Sunday is the biggest beer-selling day of the week," said Bryan Kerr, owner of Moore Liquor. "So, it really does open up some business that we didn't have access to before for people that want to come in and get a six-pack for the big game."

Kerr said the overwhelming support to open liquor stores on Sundays tells him a few things.

"One, they realized the innate unfairness of letting big box stores like Walmart sell beer and wine seven days a week for many more hours than a liquor store can," Kerr said. "And two, people want to shop someplace that's nice and local and easy to get in and get out of."

Kerr, who also is the president of the Retail Liquor Association of Oklahoma, said a lot of the smaller stores have struggled since new beer laws passed a few years ago. He hopes Super Tuesday's vote will help.

"We're losing approximately three locally owned liquor stores a month in the state of Oklahoma for the last two years as a result of the new laws," Kerr said. "Every little bit helps, but this isn't going to be enough to really save anybody's store. If they're struggling, it might help a little here and there."

Although the new law allows liquor stores in seven counties to be open Sundays, those stores aren't required to be open. The law just gives them the option to be open.

Kerr told KOCO 5 he expects more counties to follow suit for the general election in November.
