On the Fourth of July 2018, the US Postal Service issued a set of twenty different stamps commemorating the popular song “America the Beautiful.” Four different designs were utilized to represent each of the following five lines from the well-known verse:

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain…
From sea to shining sea.

Katherine Lee Bates never mentioned scorching deserts, nevertheless this image of California’s Death Valley made it onto the stamp pane (ostensibly representing spacious skies).

The view on the stamp is looking west across Death Valley toward the Panamint Range from the area near the Golden Canyon trailhead just south of Furnace Creek.
