En The Paths of Liberty

To preserve the memory of the events experienced during the Second World War, the organizations representing the Resistance and the Deportation have decided to create a circuit of WAYS of LIBERTY in Civraisien.

During the 1940-1944 period, our region suffered from war and enemy-imposed occupation in defiance of democracy and normal living conditions. Since the occupation began, courageous compatriots have fought to defend the values ??of PAIS, LIBERTY and JUSTICE. This resistance to the occupier was often accompanied by tragic consequences for our villages and its inhabitants, in particular in the days preceding the LIBERATION of September 1944. The Circuit of the Paths of Freedom around Civray, connecting twelve tested sites of our region, testify and preserve the memory of these events. (extract from the panels)

CIVRAY: Resistance Center since the beginning of the occupation and creation of the Maquis D2 BAYARD.
SAINT SAVIOL: Railway center used intensively by the occupant. Numerous sabotages by FFI groups and machine guns by Allied aviation.
SAUZE-VAUSSAIS: Active Resistance Center since the start of the occupation with the creation of three Maquis.
CHAUNAY: Meeting place for resistance fighters. Three hostages executed.
ROMAGNE: Resistance actions by groups in Vienne-Sud. Four civilians shot dead.
CHAMPAGNE St HILAIRE: Attack for the release of Senegalese prisoners of war at stud farms. Thirteen victims and reprisals in the village.
St MAURICE la CLOUERE: Passage place and ambushes. Nine hostages shot dead in the castle grounds.
JOUSSE: Fire in the town and temporary hostage taking.
MAUPREVOIR: Municipality cut in half by the dividing line. Clandestine passages.
THE VIGEANT: Martyr village. Village burnt down and looted. Forty two victims (Maquisards and civilians).
PLEUVILLE: Resistance center during the whole occupation. Clandestine crossing of the dividing line. Resistance and prosecution accommodation. Creation of the Maquis D4 RAF. Borough and farms burnt down. Three maquisards and a Canadian sergeant killed.
CHARROUX: Place of residence of Maquis D1 CHARROUX and D2 BAYARD. Five people arrested and shot dead in Le VIGEANT.

Pour conserver la mémoire des évènements vécus lors de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, les organisations représentatives de la Résistance et de la Déportation ont décidé la création d’un circuit des CHEMINS de la LIBERTÉ en Civraisien.

Au cours de la période 1940-1944, notre région a souffert de la guerre et d’une occupation imposée par l’ennemi dans le mépris de la démocratie et des conditions de vie normales. Depuis le début de l’occupation, des compatriotes courageux ont lutté pour défendre les valeurs de PAIS, de LIBERTÉ et de JUSTICE. Cette résistance à l’occupant a souvent été accompagnée de conséquences tragiques pour nos villages et ses habitants, notamment dans les jours précédents la LIBÉRATION de Septembre 1944. Le Circuit des Chemins de la Liberté autour de Civray, reliant douze sites éprouvés de notre région, témoigne et conserve la mémoire de ces évènements. (extrait des panneaux)

CIVRAY : Centre de Résistance depuis le début de l’occupation et création du Maquis D2 BAYARD.
SAINT SAVIOL : Centre ferroviaire utilisé de manière intensive par l’occupant. Nombreux sabotages par les groupes FFI et mitraillages par l’aviation alliée.
SAUZE-VAUSSAIS : Centre de Résistance active depuis le début de l’occupation avec création de trois Maquis.
CHAUNAY : Lieu de rencontre de résistants. Trois otages exécutés.
ROMAGNE : Actions de Résistance par les groupes de Vienne-Sud. Quatre civils abattus.
CHAMPAGNE St HILAIRE : Attaque pour la libération des prisonniers de guerre sénégalais aux haras. Treize victimes et représailles sur le bourg.
St MAURICE la CLOUERE : Lieu de passage et embuscades. Neuf otages abattus dans le parc du château.
JOUSSE : Incendie du bourg et prise d’otages temporaire.
MAUPREVOIR : Commune coupée en deux par la ligne de démarcation. Passages clandestins.
LE VIGEANT : Village martyr. Bourg incendié et pillé. Quarante deux victimes (Maquisards et civils).
PLEUVILLE : Centre de Résistance pendant toute l’occupation. Passage clandestin de la ligne de démarcation. Hébergements de Résistants et de poursuivis. Création du Maquis D4 RAF. Bourg et fermes incendiés. Trois maquisards et un sergent canadien tués.
CHARROUX : Lieu de séjour des Maquis D1 CHARROUX et D2 BAYARD. Cinq personnes arrêtées et abattues à Le VIGEANT.
