North of Dunnellon is the Rainbow Springs. Designated a National Natural Landmark in October of 1971 it is ranked second of Florida's great artesian springs on the basis of its rate of discharge, and ranked first as a single outlet spring. The spring formation is the fourth-largest in Florida and produces more than 500 million gallons of water per day. Rainbow Springs forms the headwaters of the Rainbow River, which empties into the Withlacoochee River.
