In het centrum van IJsselstein staat een beeld van Fulco de Minstreel, een jongeman met een luit in de hand en een zwaard in de schede. Het beeld is in 1980 vervaardigd door de beeldhouwers Peter Siccama en Martijn Vergouw en in 1983 door de RABO-bank geschonken aan de stad. Ook het Fulcotheater en het Fulco Mannenkoor, beiden in IJsselstein, verwijzen naar hem. Maar wie was nu eigenlijk Fulco de Minstreel?
De gemeente IJsselstein schrijft op haar website: Het standbeeld van Fulco de Minstreel herinnert inwoners van IJsselstein aan de trouw van de dappere schildknaap Fulco aan de stad IJsselstein. Al vele jaren heeft Fulco met zijn minstreel in de hand standvastig zijn plek in het centrum van de stad, op de hoek van de Schuttersgracht. Fulco met zijn minstreel in de hand? Tja!
Het beeld heeft sinds 2013 een nieuwe locatie op de Overtoom. Bij het beeld is een granieten plaat geplaatst met de tekst:

Laat hier jouw moed en daden fel
Jouw liederen en snarenspel
In brons en steen vereeuwigd zijn
Die geboorte- en sterfdatum zijn een verzinsel van de RABO-bank, want Fulco heeft niet echt bestaan. Hij is de hoofdpersoon uit de jeugdroman ‘Fulco de Minstreel’ uit 1892 van Cornelis Johannes Kieviet, een schrijver die vooral bekend is geworden door zijn boeken over Dik Trom. Het boek is een geromantiseerd verhaal over een historische gebeurtenis die zich heeft afgespeeld rondom Gijsbrecht van IJsselstein en zijn vrouw Bertha van Heukelom.

In the center of IJsselstein is a statue of Fulco de Minstrel, a young man with a lute in his hand and a sword in the sheath. The statue was created in 1980 by sculptors Peter Siccama and Martijn Vergouw and donated to the city in 1983 by the RABO bank. That date of birth and death are a figment of the RABO bank, because Fulco did not really exist. He is the main character of the 1892 youth novel "Fulco de Minstrel" by Cornelis Johannes Kieviet, a writer best known for his books on Dik Trom. The book is a romanticized story about a historical event that took place around Gijsbrecht van IJsselstein and his wife Bertha van Heukelom.
