Dedicated public lifts lead directly to The Garden at 120, which is an oasis in the heart of the City. The Garden is home to 85 Italian wisteria trees, over 30 fruit trees and a 200ft-long flowing water feature, relaxed seating and a coffee hut.

Background Information

The scheme was designed by landscape architects Latz+Partner.

Design Intent

The predominant design elements of the roof garden are the topography of the gently folded floor and water feature, the walls with climbers and planting beds that enclose the plant facilities and the Wisteria ‘Trees’ growing on the steel pergola canopies folding across the roof garden at high level. The continuous walk around the perimeter offers vistas in all four directions on the London Skyline.

As well as the office workers, the roof garden will be fully accessible to the public.

Garden Composition

The garden comprises of four different areas as follows:

85 no. Wisteria Trees

146 linear m of wall planting including:

53 linear m of self clinging climbers
50 linear m of wire trellis trained climbers
25 no. apple and pear cordons
8 no. fan trained fig trees
353 m2 of bulbs, grasses and perennials borders

121 m2 of box parterres including:

125 linear m of Box hedging
52 m2 of shrubs and perennials

Growing Medium

All the plants grow in a continuous layer of growing medium that extends under the areas of hard surfacing and also forms the subgrade for the paving. This is a pure-mineral substrate consisting of lava, pumice tuff and zeolite tuff that has high water and nutrients retention capacity.

It will need to be provided with liquid fertilizer applied daily through irrigation. In order to provide the best growing condition for bulbs, grasses and perennials borders, in these the lava substrate has been complemented with 10% compost to be replenished periodically in accordance with best horticultural practice.
