When constructed in 1882 it was the longest unsupported tunnel in the southern hemisphere. Built for railway to haul goods and minerals to Bundaberg from Mt Perry, The railway closed in 1960 and rail pulled up. A gravel road now passes through the tunnel, which is home to a colony of large bent-wing bats.
