Coat of arms of Birmingham University at the West Gate to the Edgbaston Campus. The West Gate is for vehicular access by staff only, although it is heavily used by pedestrians arriving at University Railway Station and staff and students coming and going to the medical school which is a short distance to the northwest from the gate.
The Coat of arms is set alongside the name of the university which is displayed in white lettering on this predominantly black sign which is very much the modern styling of the university. Below the Coat of Arms in white lettering is the following text:
“West Gate
Staff access only
Highways Act 1980 s31(3) This land is private property which the public is welcome to use in daylight hours, whilst keeping to the footpaths. For the purposes of public safety and security this area is monitored by CCTV with video recordings. Any queries regarding the system should be directed towards Security Control on 0121 414 3000. The University is unable to accept liability for personal injury or damage to property.”
The shield of the University of Birmingham's ‘Official Blazon is shown below:

The lion and the mermaid featured on the arms of Mason Science College and the arms of Sir Josiah Mason the founder of the College in 1875. Mason Science College was the precursor and nucleus of the University of Birmingham. (
