Of the cast iron component construction, cast by Macfarlane and Company of Saracen, Glasgow, Scotland in 1888,the Bandstand is an ornamental pavilion which was originally constructed as shade over the Melville Memorial Fountain. The pavilion comprises a cast iron ogee curved shade supported on cast iron columns bedded in a concrete plinth.
Although band concerts were held in the pavilion there were some difficulties encountered viewing the conductor by some members of the band. Early in the twentieth century the bandstand was moved 18m and re-erected in the current location
