The First World War Memorial is situated in a dominant position at the entrance to the Botanic Gardens,standing 15m to the top of the obelisk the memorial comprises a base, four statues and the obelisk surmounted by a Winged Victory statue. cruciform in plan and at each end of the cross are smooth-faced plinths. Each end face of the cross displays a bronze plaque with the names of the 100 local citizens who fell during the First World War.The front plinth has an additional bronze plaque commemorating the 55 soldiers who fell in the Second World War.
At each end of the cross stands a life size Carrara marble statue representing a Red Cross nurse, a soldier, a sailor and an airman. They all stand at ease facing outward
