Albert Ernest Carrier de Belleuse dit Carrier-Belleuse était un sculpteur français qui apprit très jeune, le modelage et le dessin.

A treize ans, il entre en apprentissage chez le ciseleur Beauchery, puis il travaille chez l’orfèvre Fauconnier.

David d’Angers qu’il fréquente le fait admettre à l’Ecole des Beaux-arts, en 1840, à seize ans.

Très vite, il abandonne l’enseignement académique, étudie les maîtres du XVIIIe et exécute des ouvrages destinés au commerce du bronze.

Il débute au Salon de 1850 et l’année suivante s’exile en Angleterre (à Stoks Upon Trent, dans le Staffordshire), à la demande de la direction de la manufacture de porcelaine Minton. Il y crée de nombreux modèles reproduits en céramique.

Il est de retour à Paris en 1855.

Carrier-Belleuse travaille pour les églises Saint Augustin, Saint Vincent de Paul (Le Messie), pour la Comédie Française (Cariatides ailées), le Palais du Louvre (L’Abondance), l’Opéra Garnier (Torchères), l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris, le Tribunal de commerce de Paris (Cariatides), le Casino de Vichy (Nymphe des eaux), l’Hôtel Païva à Paris, le Château de Sablé (Fronton).

Il est l’auteur des monuments à l’honneur de Massena (Nice) et d’Alexandre Dumas, père (Villers-Côtteret).

Il reçoit aussi des commandes pour un monument érigé à Buenos-Aires à la mémoire du général Don José San Matino et pour un monument érigé à Santiago du Chili (Anges).

Carrier-Belleuse est un portraitiste reconnu et réalise de nombreux bustes ou statuettes représentant Napoléon III, Camille Desmoulins, François Arago, Jules Simon, Lefuel, Delacroix, Gustave Doré, Théophile Gautier, Jules Grévy, le général Boulanger, Alphand, Voltaire jeune, Rubens, Shakespeare, Beethoven, les actrices Marguerite Bellanger. Céline Chaumont, Aimée Olympe Desclée.

Il exécute surtout de nombreux groupes ou statuettes en terre cuite sur des thèmes allégoriques comme la Confidence, la Tempérance, la Charité, le Printemps, … ou des sujets mythologiques comme le Triomphe de Silène, les Titans, Léda, Cérès. .

Il est l’un des sculpteurs les plus fécond du XIXe siècle. En renouant souvent avec le goût du XVIIIe siècle, il produit des œuvres par dizaine, de petits groupes, des statuettes, des bustes, des ornements, des candélabres qui sont très recherchés sous l’Empire.

Il remporte une médaille de troisième classe en 1861, un rappel de médaille en 1863, une médaille en 1866, une médaille d’or à l’Exposition universelle de 1867 (Le Messie).

Carrier-Belleuse est décoré de Légion d’honneur en 1867 et il est promu au grade d’officier en 1885.

En 1875, il est nommé directeur des travaux d’art à la manufacture de Sèvres et il le restera jusqu’à disparition.

L'oeuvre L'Automne est une sculpture d'une taille à peine inférieure à la taille humaine, réhaussée par un piédestal. Cette oeuvre qui existe en pierre (ici) mais aussi en bronze, nous montre une jeune femme, peu vêtue, qui verse un liquide d'une amphore dans un verre.

He was one of the most fruitful sculptors of the 19th century. Often reconnecting with the taste of the 18th century, he produced works by the dozen, small groups, statuettes, busts, ornaments, candelabras that were highly sought after during the Empire.

He won a third class medal in 1861, a medal recall in 1863, a medal in 1866, a gold medal at the 1867 World's Fair (The Messiah).

Carrier-Belleuse was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1867 and was promoted to the rank of officer in 1885.

In 1875, he was appointed director of works of art at the Sèvres factory and remained so until he disappeared.

The work Autumn is a sculpture barely smaller than human size, heightened by a pedestal. This work which exists in stone (here) but also in bronze, shows us a young woman, barely dressed, who pours a liquid from an amphora into a glass.
