The first building, a hotel to serve the railroad workers, was built here in 1879. The town was incorporated as a village in 1879, and as a city in 1921. It has always had a 'railroad town' atomosphere. The town is located on the western edge of the Choteau Hills (glacial artifacts) and is just east of Aberdeen, SD on the flat prairie of the Great Plains.
