FR Trois monuments de ce type sont présents à Montpellier, dans la pinède de La Paillade, au pied du Corum et au centre du rond-point Christophe-Colomb (ce waymark).

Mais alors, qu’est-ce qu’un octroi ? Ces bâtiments délimitaient, en 1876, le territoire de perception d’une taxe : le droit d’octroi, sorte de barrière douanière municipale qui servait à récolter de l’argent sur les denrées qui entraient en ville. Ce droit ne sera levé qu’en 1948.

À Montpellier, on comptait 13 bureaux principaux sur les plus grands axes de communication et 15 postes d’observation sur les voies secondaires. La surveillance de cette taxe appartenait à la mairie, qui collaborait avec la régie des contributions indirectes. Un receveur, épaulé par deux préposés, assurait le service de chaque bureau.

Ce métier, d’après des témoignages d’époque, était loin d’être une partie de plaisir puisque le receveur était privé de sa famille, devant manger et dormir dans le bâtiment.

Il reste aujourd'hui trois monuments encore présents à Montpellier, dans la pinède de La Paillade, au pied du Corum sous forme de fontaine et au centre du rond-point Christophe-Colomb.

Remarque Il n'est pas le seul bâtiment à être photographié ici car il a été déplacé il y a des années sur le rond point mais l'an dernier a été inauguré, juste ne bordure de ce même rond point, l'Arbre Blanc qui vient de se voir décerner la semaine dernière le titre de "plus beau bâtiment d'habitation du monde". On peut voir les deux bâtiments ensemble sur certaines de mes photos.

But then, what is a grant? These buildings delimited, in 1876, the territory of collection of a tax: the right of granting, kind of municipal customs barrier which was used to collect money on the goods which entered town. This right was not lifted until 1948.

In Montpellier, there were 13 main offices on the main communication axes and 15 observation posts on the secondary roads. The supervision of this tax belonged to the town hall, which collaborated with the management of indirect contributions. A receiver, supported by two agents, ensured the service of each office.

This job, according to testimony from the time, was far from being a pleasure since the recipient was deprived of his family, having to eat and sleep in the building.

Today, there are three monuments still present in Montpellier, in the pine forest of La Paillade, at the foot of the Corum in the form of a fountain and in the center of the Christophe-Colomb roundabout.

Note It is not the only building to be photographed here because it was moved years ago on the roundabout but last year was inaugurated, just on the edge of this same roundabout, the White Tree which comes to be awarded the title of "most beautiful residential building in the world" last week. We can see the two buildings together in some of my photos.
