The blue plaque marks the house on Chapel Street where Sir Thomas Reade lived. The house known as 'Homefield' is situated next door to St Peter's Church where there is a memorial to him.

The blue plaque is situated on the wall the property next the front door and is inscribed as follows;

Sir Thomas Reade (1782 -1849) Deputy Adjutant-General in St. Helena.

Thomas Reade was born in 1782 in Congleton. He was the only son of William Reade, a surgeon of Congleton, and Hannah, his second wife. His mother died when he was two and his father when he was eleven. He was articled to a Congleton Attorney, but ran away when he was 16 and enlisted in the army.
He had a distinguished military career leading to his being knighted at the age of 33.
Thomas was sent to St Helena as part of Napoleon's guard, where he remained until the former French emperor's death.
He was a British-Consul in Tunis from 1844 to his death in 1849 and received a public funeral.
