The siege was undertaken by what was described as a Muslim fundamentalist, though all the Australian Muslim leaders made statements saying that they disavowed themselves of Man Monis and his action - who held 10 customers and 8 staff hostage with a shotgun. The Lindt Cafe is diagonally opposite the Channel Seven TV studio, so there was almost constant direct-view coverage on the television.

The police were heavily criticised, as there seemed to be no negotiation, just a storming of the cafe 16 hours after the start, when a shot inside was heard. Unfortunately one hostage was killed by Monis, and another accidentally killed by police fire on their entry. And Monis was also shot by police multiple times. Several of the captives had already escaped during the siege.
