Living New Deal

"The Newcastle park, constructed adjacent to the lake was part of the development of roadside parks in anticipation of the tourists and visitors to Texas for the 1936 Texas Centennial celebration. The original purpose was “to provide cool shade alongside tortuous highways navigated by Depression-era cars without air-conditioning."

The picnic tables and benches from this park have been removed or demolished, although the markers remain.

I visited in 2014 shortly after this was posted to Living New Deal. There apparently had been an accident at the location. Everything was a mess.

Project type: Park structure/building (other than lodge)

Date built or created: 1936

Location: Newcastle, Texas Roadside Park

City: Newcastle

Condition: In great disrepair
