One Times Square was once the home of the New York Times. It is a 25-story, 363-foot-high (111 m) building, designed by Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz, and built in 1904. What makes this address so interesting is that, although the building is sited on perhaps the most expensive real estate in New York City and is one of the most photographed locations in the world, the building is mostly vacant. The New York Times moved its corporate headquarters to 229 West 43rd Street in 1913 and remained there until 2007 but still maintained ownership of the building.
In 1995, it was sold to Lehman Brothers, the now defunct financial services firm, for $27.5 million. When Lehman Brothers went bankrupt in 2007 the building became mostly unoccupied and remains so today. Since the building is covered with billboards in a very highly visible area, it was decided to rely on advertising income for revenue.
One Time Square is the site of the famous New Year's Day ball drop which is televised worldwide. One Times Square is considered one of the most valuable advertising locations in the world, due to the large amount of revenue generated by its signage. It generates over $7 million dollars a year in revenue at a 300% profit margin.
