In 1880, major work began to expand the station. On August 15, 1927, the new building was inaugurated by the Northern Railway Company. It is due to the architect Urban Cassan.
Due to the movement of land related to mining, the new station is built without floors, on a general slab of reinforced concrete, in order to avoid the dislocation of the building in the event of soil compaction.
The station looks like a steam locomotive, thanks to its 23 meter high tower which can represent the chimney, the porches, the wheels, and the passenger building, the control station. At the top of this tower, a clock with four dials is installed.
During the construction of the station, its architect Urbain Cassan had to take into account the significant risk of subsidence related to mining. He thus proposed a building marked by horizontality, composed of simple modules of a single level which extends over 86 m in total length and 17 m in width for the central part; the wings are 9.50 m wide, and 25 and 31 m respectively.
He also used reinforced concrete, a new material, light and easy to use. The architect of the annex buildings (former sideboard, “rolling” building, etc.) adopts the same characteristics as that of the main building. The facade of the station displays great sobriety, the decor can be summed up in a simple frieze of diamonds located under the cornice. This motif finds an echo on the railings, work of the ironworker Edgar Brandt.
Inside, the still visible elements of the care given to the decoration are the cubist-inspired mosaics, created by Auguste Labouret, representing in particular the mine. "

À cause des mouvements de terrain liés à l'extraction minière, la nouvelle gare est bâtie sans étage, sur un radier général de béton armé, afin d'éviter la dislocation du bâtiment en cas de tassement du sol.
La gare ressemble à une locomotive à vapeur, grâce à sa tour haute de 23 mètres pouvant représenter la cheminée, les porches, les roues, et le bâtiment des voyageurs, le poste de commande. Tout en haut de cette tour, une horloge à quatre cadrans est installée.

Il a ainsi proposé un bâtiment marqué par l'horizontalité, composé de modules simples d'un seul niveau qui s'étend sur 86 m de longueur totale et de 17 m de largeur pour la partie centrale ; les ailes font 9,50 m de largeur, et respectivement 25 et 31 m.
Il a par ailleurs utilisé le béton armé, nouveau matériau, léger et facile à mettre en œuvre. L'architecte des bâtiments annexes (ancien buffet, bâtiment des « roulants »…) adopte les mêmes caractéristiques que celle du bâtiment principal. La façade de la gare affiche une grande sobriété, le décor se résumant à une simple frise de losanges située sous la corniche. Ce motif trouve un écho sur les grilles, œuvre du ferronnier d'art Edgar Brandt.
À l'intérieur, les éléments encore visibles du soin apporté à la décoration sont les mosaïques d'inspiration cubiste, réalisées par Auguste Labouret, représentant notamment la mine. "
