Curral das Freiras (the Nuns' Valley) is Madeira's deepest valley and is surrounded by 800 m high mountainsides. The village (2300 in.) Is scattered on several plateaus up the mountains.
The village square is a lively marketplace. From mini trucks, clothes, fruits and vegetables are sold - and the surrounding bars and restaurants offer local specialties.
In the square it is also possible to take a photo where you are wearing a nun costume. It is otherwise free of charge and used by tourists.
