The Northern Bald Ibis (also called Waldrapp) is a critically endangered species that has gotten extinct in almost all of its original natural habitats. Only a few colonies are left in Turkey and Morocco.

In 1994, Micke Grove Zoo in Lodi, California built an aviary to support the protection of the bird. The zoo has successfully bred a number of birds which then were released into the wild in the Mediterranean (hence the name Mediterranean Way Stations).

Visitors can enter the aviary through double doors.

Currently there are about a dozen northern bald ibis in the aviary. The facility also hosts speckled pigeons, European rollers and buff-banded rails.
