" At 3:10 a.m. on June 7, 1917, the Allies launched their meticulously prepared assault. They began by detonating the numerous mines carefully placed by the sappers along the German lines on the crest of Messines. They then continued with prolonged artillery fire before the attack.
Supervised by the Australians and the British, the New Zealand troops advanced rapidly on the ground to take the German positions. They progressed and took the ruins of the village of Messines, occupied by the Germans, then consolidated their position.
New Zealand had many victims: 3,000 injured and 700 dead. However, this battle was seen as a complete victory for the Allies and the best assault led so far by Lieutenant-General Haig. It consolidated New Zealanders' reputation for combat excellence and added to their unbroken streak of military success. After this success, the Allies had great hopes for their next operation: the assault on Passchendaele. "
