This bench with information panels about the Bridgewater Canal is one of a number that were installed in the Salford area as part of a 5.5 million pound regeneration project.

The regeneration project including renovation of a canalwharf, artworks along the canal and information boards and maps.

In some case like this one the information is in the form of panels situated at each end of benches at the side of the canal. The benches are in the shape of small boats that were used inside tunnels in coal mines at Worsley that connected to the Bridgewater Canal.

Manchester's Cottonopolis spread far and wide. Monton Mill was
a cotton spinning mill built in 1906 on the canal banks just to the
south of here. Now demolished, the only reminder that it once
occupied a place here is the street name Montomill Gardens.
