Given the popularity of the dinosaurs in Glen Rose and surrounding parts of Somervell County, it's only proper that something else from their time would find its way into the local architecture. Petrified wood from the Middle Cretaceous period, when those same dinosaurs were walking around this area and leaving footprints that we can still see today, was a proverbial nuisance in the 1920s, and those who pushed it up on their property couldn't get rid of it quickly enough. It was sold inexpensively and found its purpose as construction material. A "honeymoon cottage" is behind you across the street, and there are a good number of homes, park buildings, hotels, civic buildings, service stations, and other structures, like the star-shaped fountain on the square, that are still with us today, reminders of the distant and not-too-distant past.

This arch is made of petrified wood and brick, with "River-Crest" in black tiles on a white background made of white tiles. It stands on private property, but visitors can still see the old wood and stone cottages from back in the day when this was still River Crest Park, and before it, Pruitt's Park. The cottages all had silly names, like Walk Inn, Sleep Inn, Get Inn, Dewdrop Inn, and Butt Inn. One can feel free to enjoy the scenery from the road side of the fence, but please respect the property owner's signage, and be careful to not block traffic.
