A model replica of Ashley Village, Northamptonshire, in St Mary's church, Ashley. Recreated from an 1807 map of the village. It was made by John Stearn, a former church warden, 1973 - 1986.

"At the time of the survey which resulted in the Dooms-
day Book, Ashley was known as 'Ascele', a name
of obvious Saxon or Danish origin. It probably began
as a cleared daughter-settlement, in the huge
Rockingham Forest - "the vill in the Ash Wood" ~
There are several perpetual springs in the area, which
could have been an important factor in the place-
ment of the vill.~ It was mapped for the Enclosures
Act in 1807, from which this model was made, by the
late John Stearn, one time Churchwarden, in 1976. Since
then, a number of new houses have been built, & the
farm barns of the Manor & Northerwood Grange have
been converted into homes. ~~
In 1807 the Parish was 1190 acres in extant, and its
ratable value was £1978. The population at that
time was 330 souls. (Today it is around 250) ~
The principle land owners were Sir John Palmer,
who was Lord of the Manor, Reverent Richard
Farrer, Rector, and Thomas Ouseley Esq., Thomas
Wade Esq, and Messers F & E Berry.
Between 1850 - 1880, Rev. R.T. Pulteney, the
Rector, restored the church, & built the school,
school-house & a group of almshouses. ~~~ "
