Smithsonian Art Inventory"The statue depicts Joseph Cullen Root, founder of the Fraternal Order of the Woodmen of the World. It was installed by the Order of the Woodmen in honor of their members who were victims of the Galveston flood of 1900. Members' grave markers from 1906-1978 surround the sculpture.
General Joseph Cullen Root stands dressed in a vest and knee-length suit coat. His left arm is bent at the elbow with hand extended and his right hand holds the lapel of his jacket. The sculpture is mounted upon a tapered pink granite base flanked on each side by a tree trunk with sheared limb stumps. The base has a wider, stepped bottom. The sculpture is placed upon a concrete platform with steps at the front and rear.
