3079 Schiller (2578 P-L) is a main-belt asteroid discovered on September 24, 1960 by Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory. It was named for the famous German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805).
Bronze bust
Friedrich von Schiller, widely regarded as the country’s most important playwright and one of the leading lights of German literature. The bust can be found in a small park near the municipal museum. The statue was instaled here in 1905 to commemorate the centenary of the Schiller's death. In these times Moarvska Trebová (Mährisch Trübau) was the largest German linguistic enclave within Bohemia and Moravia. The statue was commisioned by Ludwig V. Holzmaister (1849-1923) who in the years 1904-1906 built here at his own expense a neo-Renaissance museum building in which the museum is still housed today.
The bust of the 'Poet of Freedom' was placed on a pedestal made of sandstone and a pillar made of red marble. The sculpture was based on the famous bust by the prominent German classical sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841), which the author dedicated to Schiller in 1797.
