Hank's website (linked below) says The Hank the Cowdog series began as a self-publishing venture in John R. Erickson's garage in 1982 and has endured to become one of the nation’s most popular series for children and families. Through the eyes of Hank the Cowdog, a smelly, smart-aleck Head of Ranch Security, Erickson gives readers a glimpse of daily life on a ranch in the West Texas Panhandle.
Heritage Park in San Angelo was created in 2018. Hank has been there from the beginning. John R. Erickson, author of Hank the Cowdog, got his literary start with San Angelo's Livestock Weekly in the 1980s, according to this article (

Hank's statue, donated by Lee and Candyce Pfluger, was also placed in conjunction with Hank the Cowdog-related ranching culture curriculum that Lee Pfluger worked with Texas Tech University and San Angelo Independent School District to develop, for use in local schools. There's another article about Heritage Park that covers that: (
