"The Pilot Grove Cemetery had its beginning in as a Methodist Episcopal Church, South burial ground. In Apr of 1868, Samuel Roe, Sr., sold to the already established Methodist Church three acres for a cemetery; this too was near a campground. The church maintained the cemetery until 1913, when the association was formed. Even before the founding of the church, this ground was used as a cemetery, with a stone in the original cemetery showing that a 13 month 16 day old child was buried there Oct. 7, 1831. The stone is broken in such a way that no name appears to identify the child. The next graves are those of Rev. J. K. Lucy, who was a member of the St. Louis Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, who died Jul 11, 1855, and his wife Susannah Lacy, on Jun 9, 1857.
Additional land was purchased in 1915 from Simmons, and in 1945 from Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Evangs." ~ MOGenWeb, Cooper County
