En 1066, le nouvel évêque, Géraud Chevrier, chargé de remettre de l'ordre dans le diocèse, est rejeté par les chanoines et les vicomtes de Sisteron. Il se réfugie à Forcalquier, établit son siège épiscopal dans l’église Saint Mary et instaure une « concathédralité » entre Sisteron et Forcalquier, selon des modalités uniques dans l'histoire de l'Église.

La construction de Notre Dame du Bourguet (ou du Marché), remplaçant un édifice antérieur, commence à la fin du XIIe siècle. L‘église, intégrée au système défensif de la ville, était conçue à l'origine comme une croix latine comprenant une nef centrale de style roman à deux travées, un transept (terminé avant 1217) et une abside s'essayant au gothique selon des techniques et un esprit largement romans. Deux absidioles dans ce dernier style terminent programme.

Dans ces années-là, Forcalquier était un vaste chantier, puisqu’on y bâtissait (ou rebâtissait) en même temps Saint-Mary et sa tour, Saint Jean, Notre Dame du Bourguet et Saint-Promace... On peut mesurer à cela la puissance que possède alors la capitale du comté.

En 1486, la première cathédrale de Forcalquier Saint Mary en haut de la colline de la citadelle, endommagée par des combats est peut à peu désaffecté, Notre-Dame-du- Bourguet devient a son tour le siège de la concathédrale.

Au XVlle, pour l’agrandir, on ouvre les arcs de décharge qui ornaient les parois latérales pour créer les deux nefs collatérales. Le bas côté sud, établi au dessus du cimetière jouxtant la nef principale, détermina alors le niveau du sol de toute l'église et l'on remblaya la nef principale sur deux mètres, diminuant ainsi d'autant sa hauteur.

La tour-clocher, édifiée au début du XVlle siècle, repose sur la croisée du transept. La plus ancienne de ses quatre cloches, le bourdon, « Maria Sauvaterra »,remonte au 1491 et a été refondue en 1608 puis à nouveau en 1939. L‘orgue est la pièce maîtresse du mobilier de cette église. Succédant à un premier instrument, il fut établi en 1699 sous la belle rosace, sur une tribune, et n‘a cessé depuis de bénéficier de restaurations et d'améliorations. Dans son grand dépouillement et son mélange d'un type inédit de roman et de gothique, cette église est un superbe exemple de l‘architecture religieuse provençale et le témoin encore érigé de la longue histoire de ce comté de Forcalquier.

In those years, Forcalquier was a vast construction site, since there were built (or rebuilt) at the same time Saint-Mary and its tower, Saint Jean, Notre Dame du Bourguet and Saint-Promace ... We can measure that the power then possessed by the county capital.

In 1486, the first cathedral of Forcalquier Saint Mary at the top of the citadel hill, damaged by fighting, was gradually abandoned, Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet in turn became the seat of the concathedral.

In the 17th century, to enlarge it, the discharge arches which adorned the side walls were opened to create the two side aisles. The lower south side, established above the cemetery adjoining the main nave, then determined the level of the ground of the whole church and the main nave was backfilled for two meters, thus reducing its height accordingly.

The bell tower, built at the beginning of the 18th century, rests on the crossing of the transept. The oldest of its four bells, the drone, "Maria Sauvaterra", dates back to 1491 and was redesigned in 1608 and again in 1939. The organ is the centerpiece of the furniture in this church. Succeeding a first instrument, it was established in 1699 under the beautiful rose window, on a grandstand, and has since continued to benefit from restorations and improvements. In its great stripping and its mixture of an original type of Romanesque and Gothic, this church is a superb example of Provencal religious architecture and the witness still erected of the long history of this county of Forcalquier.
