The UIW school mascot is the cardinal. The giant bronze bird is mounted on a large concrete base outside the football field and is oriented as if has just landed on a branch.

A large bronze sculpture of a cardinal flying, with wings spread apart in a horizontal glide as if it had just landed on a branch. This sculpture of a cardinal is found by the east edge of the end zone, but outside of the Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. The large concrete base on which the flying bird is mounted is painted in the school's colors: bright red for the base with white letters of UIW painted on all four sides of the base. Upon this base is a large representation of a bronze cliff with a tree branch growing up the side and over the top of this this rock cliff. The cardinal is positioned to look as if it is either just landing upon the branch or is just about to laugh into flight. The head of the bird is oriented as if to be looking across the parking lot between the tennis courts and the natatorium in front of it.
There is the name L P Stevens in large letters engraved into the back portion of the bronze forming the cliff. Below the artist's name is stamped in large letters: Stevens Art Foundry 2013.
