A student at Oral Roberts University who returned from China will be quarantined for two weeks while being observed for the Coronavirus. Other universities in Oklahoma have cancelled China study abroad programs during this health crisis.

Tulsa’s Oral Roberts University quarantined a student who returned from a trip to China on Thursday, schools officials said.

The World Health Organization recently declared the coronavirus a global health emergency after thousands of people have been infected worldwide. Most of those cases are in China.

Stephanie Hill, director of university relations, told FOX23 they called the Tulsa County Health Department for recommendations when they learned when the student planned to return.

Hill said health officials did not have specific recommendations, but the epidemiologist thought it would be wise to quarantine the student in order to be proactive.

The student is not showing any signs of the virus, but the school will hold them in a 14-day quarantine to make sure symptoms don’t develop over time.

Hill said the student made it through all necessary airport screenings and they don’t anticipate the virus to develop. She said the student did not travel to the Chinese province where the virus is most prevalent.

ORU will provide all necessities to the student and is making plans to ensure they can continue class work during the quarantine.
