Das historische Rathaus steht mitten auf dem Marktplatz von Lechenich. Es wurde 1862 gebaut und war damit bereits das fünfte Rathaus an diesem Ort: Mitte des 15. Jahrunderts wurde das erste Bürgerhaus gebaut, das bei der Belagerung Lechnichs 1642 abbrannte. 1681 wurde das zweite Rathaus fertiggestellt, das bereits 1702 wieder bei einem Stadtbrand zerstört worden ist. Das dritte Rathaus wurde 1752 durch einen Neubau ersetzt, weil das alte baufällig geworden ist. Zu dieser Zeit waren in dem Rathaus auch eine Wachstube, ein Gerichtssaal und Gefängniszellen untergebracht. 1861-1862 wurde das Gebäude dann wegen Platzmangel abgerissen und durch ein größeres Rathaus ersetzt. Dieses wurde bis heute erhalten und gepflegt. Seit 1982 steht es unter Denkmalschutz.

Das Rathaus ist ein zweistöckiger Backsteinbau mit einem kreuzförmigen Grundriss. Besonders auffällig sind die Treppengibel auf allen vier Seiten des Gebäudes, an deren Spitzen sich eiserne Wetterfahnen befinden. Über dem Haupteingang auf der Nordseite ist das Lechenicher Stadtwappen aus Sandstein in die Fassade eingearbeitet.

Nachträglich hinzugekommen ist die Sirene in der Mitte des Dachs. Sie dient heute hauptsächlich der Alarmierung der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr, kann aber auch zur Warnung vor Katastrophen eingesetzt werden.

Da das historische Rathaus für die heutigen Verhältnisse viel zu klein ist, sind die meisten städtischen Einrichtungen einschließlich dem Bürgermeisterbüro in ein Stadthaus weiter außerhalb verlegt worden. Lediglich das Standesamt sowie der pädagogische Familiendienst haben ihre Büros noch im historischen Rathaus.

Lechenich ist ein Ort mit etwa 12.000 Einwohnern im Rhein-Erft-Kreis südwestlich von Köln. Seine Geschichte geht bis zur Römerzeit zurück, im Mittelalter wurde die Marktsiedlung zu einer befestigten Stadt ausgebaut. Von diesen Befestigungen sind noch heute die beiden Stadttore Herriger Tor und Bonner Tor erhalten. Außerdem ist der historische Ortskern immer noch von Wassergräben umgeben, die früher um die Stadtmauer herumführten. Zentraler Platz im Zentrum des Ortes ist der Marktplatz, dessen Mittelpunkt das historische Rathaus bildet. Neben historischen Bauwerken und Denkmälern sind hier heute Geschäfte und Cafes zu finden. Seit 1969 ist Lechenich eingemeindet und ein Stadtteil von Erftstadt.

The historic town hall is in the middle of the market square of Lechenich. It was built in 1862 and was already the fifth town hall at this location: In the middle of the 15th century, the first town house was built, which burned down during the siege of Lechnich in 1642. The second town hall was completed in 1681 and was destroyed again in a town fire in 1702. The third town hall was replaced by a new building in 1752 because the old one had become dilapidated. The town hall is a two-story brick building with a cross-shaped floor plan. Particularly striking are the stair gables on all four sides of the building, with iron weather vanes at the top. The Lechenich coat of arms made of sandstone is incorporated into the facade above the main entrance on the north side.

The siren in the middle of the roof was added later. Today it mainly serves to alert the volunteer fire brigade, but can also be used to warn of catastrophes.

Since the historic town hall is far too small for today's needs, most of the city's facilities, including the mayor's office, have been moved to a town house further outside. Only the registry office and the educational family service still have their offices in the historic town hall.

Lechenich is a town with about 12,000 inhabitants in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis southwest of Cologne.
