The towns of Dunkeld and Birnam lie on both sides of the River Tay in Perthshire on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. Little Dunkeld lies on the southern end of Dunkeld Bridge that crosses the river and it is here on top of a wooded hillock that the First World War memorial was placed in 1921.
The memorial takes the form of a tall tapering cairn some thirty foot tall with rough stone blocks hewn from the nearby hill of Craig Barns. The memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Atholl on October 16th 1921.
A bronze plaque containing 74 names and rank is set on the north side of the cairn and was added to by a plaque containing 24 names from World War II. A further name from Northern Ireland was added in 1973.
The cairn is visible straight ahead after crossing southward over the bridge and a slanting path up the hillside offers access.
