This milestone is at the junction of the River Thames and the Kennet & Avon Canal and at this point is shared by national cycle routes 4 and 5.
Route 4 is 432 miles long and stretches east to west from London to Fishguard, passing through Reading on the way.
Route 5 stretches 381 miles and connects Reading to North Wales.
SUSTRANS is an organisation that promotes the use of cycles as a green form of transport. A national network of cycle routes is being developed in conjunction with local councils. Wherever possible the routes avoid roads, but in some places have to share the road network.
As part of the millennium celebrations 1000 mileposts have been installed at various positions throughout the whole SUSTRANS network.
Sustrans commissioned four artists from the four countries of the United Kingdom to design cast iron ‘Millennium Mileposts’, but each design was spread throughout the network rather than being only installed in the country of birth of the artist.
The design by Welsh artist, Andrew Rowe, is based upon the nautical and industrial heritage of his native Swansea and can have up to four directional fingers.
This particular one has three fingers, two point each way along the Thames, the third along the Kennet and Avon Canal.
