The University of Incarnate Word (UIW) is a private Catholic university in San Antonio, TX about 2.5 miles north of downtown that allows access to the public to its campus. Most of the campus parking is by permit only, but there are parking spaces open for public use located behind the softball stadium in the athletic complex at the entrance to the Headwaters Sanctuary. The Headwaters Sanctuary is "the only nature sanctuary in the heart of San Antonio" and is adjacent to and accessible through the UIW property. By agreement with UIW, the parking spaces at the Headwaters Sanctuary entrance are allowed for public parking on Friday after classes are out and on Saturday and Sunday. Through the week, there are several large parking garages on the edges of the campus where paid parking is available.
The Headwaters Sanctuary has free maps of the 53 acre nature sanctuary. There are seven designated trails interconnecting throughout the sanctuary grounds. The path called "Heritage Loop Trail" is the path that begins at the the main entrance into the sanctuary.

The GPS coordinates for the entrance into the Headwaters Sanctuary is around N29* 28.183 W098* 28.248. From this point at the entrance you can obtain a free map the the informational kiosk nearby and can begin traveling the Heritage Loop Trail by going left in a clockwise direction along the Heritage Loop Trail. The first Station of the Cross is at the given coordinates for this waymark. The other 14 Stations are dotted along the 0.4 mile loop which will bring you back to within sight of the entrance again.

The ceramic artwork of each of the 15 Stations of the Cross was crafted and painted by Carolina Flores. The woodworking of the posts and the building of the wooden shelters for each Station was designed and built by Don Fedler as his Eagle Scout Project which he completed in 2013. Each of the Stations of the Cross along the Heritage Loop Trail has a metal marker on the pole near the engraved cross giving attribution for the work efforts of both Carolina Flores and Don Fedler. Inside each shelter, beneath the ceramic representation of the event depicted is another metal plaque that states the event and its Station number as a Roman Numeral.
