"The story behind the name is that at the time of the Crimean War, the owner of Ellerker Hall was shipping guns and ammunition to the war and bringing back ballast in his ships. He felt sure that the lady who lived in the cottage at the time lacked privacy when using her "privy" and so built her the walls , presumably in 1857, constructed out of the stone ballast.

Accordingly the house was called "Sebastopol", The Gothic character of the walling corresponds with the Gothic Revival Architecture popular at that time."
