"La Grand'Église ou église Saint-Étienne et Saint-Laurent est un édifice religieux catholique qui se situe au centre de Saint-Étienne, dans le cœur historique de la ville.
La dédicace à saint Étienne permettrait potentiellement de faire remonter la fondation initiale au Ve siècle.
La mention d'une ancienne "chapelle supérieure" dédiée à Saint-Etienne et celle d'un chapelain pourrait indiquer l'existence d'une chapelle antérieure à l'actuelle église paroissiale.
On ignore si l'emplacement de l'église actuelle correspond à celui qui vit initialement la fondation de l'église Saint-Etienne de Furan, mentionnée dans l'archiprêtré de Jarez autour de l'an mil, qui donna son nom à la ville de "Saint-Étienne-de-Furan".
À la fin du XIIe siècle et début du XIIIe siècle, la vaste paroisse s'étendait à des sources du Furan à Saint-Priest-en-Jarez. Aux lendemains du conflit ayant opposé le comte de Forez à l'archevêque de Lyon, elle correspondait à une zone pacifiée issue de la permutation de 1173.
Originellement placée sous le patronage du seigneur de Saint-Priest-en-Jarez, vassal indirect du roi de France, elle apparaît au lendemain de la scission du Forez et du Lyonnais au milieu d'un ensemble assez dense de lieux que les dispositions de la permutation avait laissé « à la liberté » de l'Église de Lyon.
Un legs de 1310 de Jocerand d'Urgel, seigneur de Saint-Priest-en-Jarez portant donation de cent sols viennois pour la « construction de l'église de Saint-Étienne-de-Furan » atteste de la construction de l'église actuelle.
La destruction des archives de Saint-Étienne durant la guerre de Cent Ans n'a laissé que peu de sources antérieures au XVe siècle permettant de proposer une chronologie de la construction de l'édifice, cette dernière ayant probablement été interrompue par la présence des troupes de mercenaires entre 1359 et 1362.
En 1469, le chœur de l'église était en ruine, mais il fut reconstruit avant 1486.
L'église est de style gothique forézien en grès houiller et possède un chœur gothique flamboyant. Elle est composée de trois nefs dotées de cinq travées avec un transept.
Cette église fait l’objet d’une inscription au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 29 décembre 1949."

"The Grand'Église or Église Saint-Étienne et Saint-Laurent is a Catholic religious building located in the center of Saint-Étienne, in the historic heart of the city.
The dedication to Saint Stephen would potentially bring the initial foundation back to the 5th century.
The mention of an old "upper chapel" dedicated to Saint-Etienne and that of a chaplain could indicate the existence of a chapel previous to the current parish church.
It is unknown if the location of the current church corresponds to that which initially saw the foundation of the Saint-Etienne church in Furan, mentioned in the archpriestly of Jarez around the year 1000, which gave its name to the city of "Saint-Étienne-de-Furan".
At the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, the vast parish extended to the sources of the Furan in Saint-Priest-en-Jarez. In the aftermath of the conflict between the Count of Forez and the Archbishop of Lyon, it corresponded to a peaceful area resulting from the permutation of 1173.
Originally placed under the patronage of the Lord of Saint-Priest-en-Jarez, indirect vassal of the King of France, it appears the day after the split of Forez and Lyonnais in the middle of a fairly dense set of places that the provisions of the permutation had left "to freedom" of the Church of Lyon.

The destruction of the archives of Saint-Etienne during the Hundred Years War left only few sources prior to the 15th century allowing us to propose a chronology of the construction of the building, the latter having probably been interrupted by the presence of troops of mercenaries between 1359 and 1362.
In 1469 the church choir was in ruins, but it was rebuilt before 1486.
The church is in the Forézien Gothic style in coal sandstone and has a flamboyant Gothic choir. It is made up of three naves with five spans with a transept.
This church has been listed as a historic monument since December 29, 1949. "
