Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a state park featuring the use of native plants and Australian transplants. Boyce Thompson was a mining magnate who created a garden in a riparian area below his palatial home along Queen Creek. To highlight the use of Australian plants he imported a variety of eucalyptus trees. The arboretum has developed a sheep shearing shed, corral and the windmill to simulate the Australian setting for the trees. The windmill is entirely ornamental, sitting on the bank of the creek which continually drains water from the Queen Creek mine a few miles away. It was probably moved to the site from one of the ranches in the area.
The arboretum is open daily except Christmas. Hours vary by season and the current cost of admission is $15 per adult.
