Located near the western edge of the Choteau Hills, Bristol is the 3rd largest town in Day County, is surrounded by fertile farming country. A government survey group arrived in 1879 and began work. On 15 October 1880, the Hastings and Dakota Division of the Milwaukee Railroad reached Siding No. 70 near this spot. This railroad town was named after Bristol, England. The first building was a hotel built by R.P. Brokaw to serve the railroad workers. In 1882, more pioneers arrived and established homes and formed the nucleus of the new town. The first post office was established in 1881. The first general store was erected in 1882, and the first school in 1883. Bristol was incorporated as a village in 1879, and as a city in 1921. In the photo shown above, US Hwy 12 rolls into town over a railroad viaduct in the manner of these small towns in days gone by.
