In Greek mythology, the sea nymphs called the Nereids are the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris.
A granite statue of one of the Nereids, named Galatea is displayed in a small park in Brandenburg, Germany. There are a number of asteroids and moons named after the Nereids. In addition to the individual names, Neptune's third largest moon, discovered on May 1, 1949 by Gerard_P._Kuiper is named after the nymphs.
The best picture of the moon was taken by Voyager 2 on August 24, 1989. |
