Text on trailhead sign, which includes the You are Here map:

Primarily an equestrian entrance, the Wildhorse Trailhead provides access to the Cactus Forest trail system and to the Saguaro Wilderness. A variety of routes pass through the diverse terrain, vegetation, and geologic features.

Horses have a long history of use in the Tucson Basin. Beginning in the late 1600s, Spanish explorers and missionaries traveled by horseback through this area. Apaches also used horses as a means to cross this portion of the Sonoran Desert. With the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, cattle grazing began in earnest and cowboys roamed the land.

Today, visitors and park staff continue the tradition by enjoying the desert on horseback.
