"L'hôtel de ville de Saint-Étienne fut construit par les architectes Dalgabio en 1821.
Avant son emplacement définitif, la mairie a eu plusieurs adresses, passant de la vieille ville au XVIIIe siècle jusqu’à la rue de Roanne à la Révolution.
En 1821 une ordonnance royale autorisa la construction d’un nouvel hôtel de ville le long de la rue de Roanne sur la place Monsieur (actuelle place de l'Hôtel-de-ville). L'édifice fut conçu par les architectes Pierre-Antoine Dalgabio et son neveu Jean-Michel Dalgabio.
Le bâtiment en carré est centré sur une cour à colonnades. L’entrée principale au sud est composée d'un grand escalier qui conduit à sept arcades. En 1864, l'édifice fut complété d'un dôme de 51 mètres de haut réalisé par l'architecte Boisson. Le dôme abritait une horloge et des cloches. En 1872, deux statues réalisées par l'artiste Étienne Montagny furent installées dans la montée des escaliers, l'une représentant la Rubanerie et l'autre la Métallurgie.
La mairie ne fut pas épargnée par les incendies, l'un en 1933 et surtout en 1952 qui endommagea le dôme et entraîna sa démolition. Dans les années 1970, la démolition de la mairie est envisagée mais le projet est abandonné après un référendum local."

"The town hall of Saint-Etienne was built by the architects Dalgabio in 1821.
Before its final location, the town hall had several addresses, from the old town in the 18th century to the rue de Roanne during the Revolution.
In 1821 a royal ordinance authorized the construction of a new town hall along rue de Roanne on Place Monsieur (now Place de l'Hotel-de-Ville). The building was designed by the architects Pierre-Antoine Dalgabio and his nephew Jean-Michel Dalgabio.
The square building is centered on a colonnaded courtyard. The main entrance to the south consists of a large staircase which leads to seven arcades. In 1864, the building was completed with a dome 51 meters high made by the architect Boisson. The dome housed a clock and bells. In 1872, two statues produced by the artist Étienne Montagny were installed on the staircase, one representing the Ribbon and the other the Metallurgy.
The town hall was not spared from the fires, one in 1933 and especially in 1952 which damaged the dome and led to its demolition. In the 1970s, the demolition of the town hall was considered, but the project was abandoned after a local referendum. "
