Richard Dalton Howser was born on May 14, 1936 in Miami, Florida and went on to play baseball for the Florida State Seminoles. Upon graduation he was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics where he made his Major League debut on April 11, 1961, appearing in 158 game. He was named to the 1961 All-Star Team and was the runner-up for the American League Rookie of the Year. Howser enjoyed an 8-years Major League Career and following his playing career he served as a coach for the New York Yankees from 1969-1978. After the firing of Yankee Manager Billy Martin, Howser was named the Yankee skipper and lead the team to 103 wins and met the Kansas City Royals for the American League Championship in 1980. The Royals defeated the Yankees to advance to the World Series and Howser was promptly fired. In 1981, he was named the Manager of the Royals and led them to their first World Series Title in 1985. Shortly after managing the 1986 All-Star game, Dick was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He battled through treatment for almost a year but lost his battle and died on June 17, 1987. He is resting here in the Tallahassee Memory Gardens in Tallahassee, Florida. Dick Howser Stadium on the Campus of Florida State University is named in his honor.

Richard Dalton Howser was born on May 14, 1936 in Miami Florida. He grew up in West Palm Beach and was a star baseball player at Palm Beach High School. Following graduation, her attended Florida State University where he was an All-American Shortstop and lead the team with a .422 batting average in 1956. After graduating from Florida State, he was drafted by the Kansas City A’s and was named to the 1961 American League All-Star Team. His Major League Career spanned 8-season with the A’s, Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees. When his playing career ended, he became a coach for the Yankees and was named the Yankee Manager in following the firing of Billy Martin. Howser was fired as the Yankee Manager following the 1980 season even though he led the Yankees to 103 wins and an appearance in the American League Championship Series. After being fired by the Yankees he was hired by the Kansas City Royals in 1981. During his time with the Royals he led them to their first World Series Title in 1985.
