L'origine de la croix verte des pharmacie
Avec le caducée, la croix verte est le seul emblème réservé aux pharmaciens dont l'usage est admis. Déposée en tant que marque collective en 1984 par le Conseil National de l'Ordre des Pharmaciens, la croix verte est en fait empruntée au symbole de l'Organisation internationale de la Croix-Rouge.

Cette croix des pharmacies n'a pas toujours été verte, mais rouge, symbole des officines françaises emprunté à l'Organisation internationale de la Croix-Rouge qui vient au secours des blessés et des malades lorsqu'il y a une guerre ou une catastrophe.

Créée à la fin du XIXe siècle, l'organisation humanitaire l'avait alors choisi pour emblème. A cette époque, de nombreux fabricants de produits ont ajouté cet emblème sur leurs productions et les pharmaciens l'ont également adopté comme symbole. Mais en 1913, la législation a restreint l'usage de cette croix rouge pour que les citoyens ne confondent pas les pharmacies avec l'Organisation internationale de la Croix-Rouge. Les pharmaciens ont finalement gardé la croix mais ont changé la couleur.

Pour certains, le vert a été choisi pour rappeler l'origine végétale de nombreux médicaments. Pour d'autres, le choix de la couleur semble puiser ses racines dans un règlement du 19 mai 1796 qui attribua aux pharmaciens militaires des brassards: des collets de couleur verte.

Les pharmaciens ont également un autre symbole: le caducée, un dessin représentant une coupe avec un serpent qui s'enroule autour. D'après les origines grecques, le serpent symbolise l'art de guérir, la fécondité et la vie tandis que la coupe est celle d'Hygie, la fille d'Esculape et déesse de la santé. Le caducée pharmaceutique, à ne pas confondre avec le caducée médical (un serpent s'enroulant autour d'un bâton) prendra son essor en 1942 lorsque le Conseil Supérieur de la Pharmacie, à la demande du secrétariat d’Etat à la Santé, décidera de le choisir comme emblème de la pharmacie française.
