"Originally opened as the Wig & Mitre in the 1970's but closed for many years. This grade II listed 16th Century building has been extensively refurbished and reopened in 2009 with a modern extension at the rear. The narrow building has bars on two floors, look out for the well mentioned in the pub's name. Payment with cash only. The pub has a ban on electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, e-readers and laptops."

The legend goes that in the 17th century old Widow Cullen had a well at the back of her house that all the other residents of the close buildings were allowed to use.
The sign shows Widow Cullen watching over one of the residents taking water from the well.
